A is for Alligator and C is for cookie

I love doing kindergarten at home! It is so much fun to learn with the little ones.  I also feel it is time for them to play and be children longer.  Joshua has learned two letters this month.  We learned the three sounds for A.  We did several fun activities with A, but Joshua and Lydia's favorite was the Allingator cupcakes we made for Family Home Evening treats.

This week Joshua has learned the two sounds for C.  We baked C cookies.  They turned out cute and Joshua and Lydia enjoyed eating them.

A busy week at our house

Rebecca started her new job on Monday in the Records Office at Western Governors University.  We are so grateful for this opportunity for her.  She also had some shows of Camelot to perform in.  She loves to be the stage! We are glad she has this show to be in.

Tuesday was Joshua and Lydia's first day of preschool.  It was a challenge to get us there at 8:45, but we made it.  They loved preschool and couldn't wait to go back on Thursday.  This a new experience for us, I have never had a child do preschool.  This is a program through the school district and a parent is required to stay with the children.  It is fun to play with Joshua and Lydia.  I am grateful for this time to spend with them.

We had such a busy week at our house. I guess that comes from having three children each doing a different sport right now.  Matthew ran cross country on Thursday in Lander.  Lander is about 4 hours away so they left by 9:00 in the morning.  He didn't get home until about 10:00 that night.  Not much school got done that day.  He didn't really like the course at Lander. He said there was a steep hill that caused most of the middle school girls to walk and cry.  Matthew was the fastest runner from Powell this week.  He took 28th overall out of 50 runners.  He is doing really well this year. While Matthew was in Lander Emma went to Basin to play volleyball.  Her team lost their matches, but she had a good time anyway.  I am so glad she has good friends on the volleyball team to hang out with when they travel.  She loves playing volleyball!  We were at David's football game in Powell when Emma called and said she was back in town.  David's team got beat, but they played hard and had a  good time.  David is really loving playing football!  I love his coaches philosophy that everyone should start either offense or defense.  I am glad that everyone gets to play and enjoy the game.

On Friday Neil and David went camping at Thermopolis with the scout troop.  They had a  good time playing in the river and doing scout things.  They got home about 8:30 last night.

Friday was the Powell Homecoming game.  I picked up MaryAnne and Dallin after school and took them to the parade.  They walked with the Parkside students.  I was going to walk it with them, but my stroller had a flat tire so Joshua, Lydia and I just watched.  Friday night MaryAnne, Matthew and I went to the game.  It was a frustrating loss.  It was Powell's first home game since Coach Stringer died in July.  It was emotional for the players I am sure.  At the end of the game we were down by 6 points our quarterback spiked the ball not realizing it was fourth down and that was the game.

I took Emma, MaryAnne, Dallin, Joshua and Lydia over to Cody yesterday to go swimming.  We had a great time together playing in the water and going to Walmart.  Joshua really wanted to go down the waterslide.  He was pretty close on the height requirement so I let him go up and see if they would let him slide down.  He was still too small so he had to walk all the way back down all those stairs.  He was disappointed but handled it alright.  There was a really cool toy shark the children enjoyed playing with.  You could toss it up into the air and it would dive into the water and swim for about 5 feet.  Dallin and Joshua really liked it a lot!

Here are a few pictures from our activities lately.  The volleyball pictures are from a couple of weeks ago.  Hope you enjoy seeing what we have been up to.

Football

David really likes to play football.  Last year we signed him up to play flag football with the Rec department.  Unfortunately, only two other boys signed up.  We gave it a try again this year with the same results.  There is a tackle league for the boys his age in Powell, Cody and Lovell.  I was dragging my feet to let him play tackle.  It costs a lot more, involves more travel and I was afraid he might get hurt.  We decided to let him play because flag football wasn't an option.  He has loved wearing his football pads and going to practice. He is on the Raiders team.   Games start next week and will keep us busy on Monday and Thursday nights.  He came home from practice last night with a twisted or sprained ankle.  We'll see if he can go to practice today.  He does love playing and I love watching him.

Happy Birthday, to my sweetheart!

Monday was a day to celebrate, not only was it Labor Day, it was also Neil's birthday.  I am so grateful for the wonderful husband and father he is.  I feel so blessed to share life with him.  We made two cakes (coconut and chocolate)  one for each 23 years of his life.  Bethany came for dinner and we enjoyed being together. Neil and I are going to go to Provo for the BYU/Utah State football game in October.  We are going to see Camelot (Rebecca's show) and try to attend General Conference in the same trip.  It will be a great getaway together.  I hope it was  a special day for Neil.

Ready to dig in.  Happy Birthday, Neil

Way to go, Matthew!!

Matthew had his first cross country race of the season on Friday, August 29th.  He doesn't like to run the Beck Lake course, last year it was his slowest time of the season.  He did a great job!! He was the second fastest for Powell, and 15th overall. I love to watch him run! We took Joshua and Lydia to watch the race.  I should have taken a picture of Lydia. She was the cutest cheerleader around with her bright pink and silver pompoms. She yelled "Go Matthew, go!" every time we saw him run by.  Even if he didn't win the race he had the cutest cheerleader.

First day of school

Neil and Bethany started their new semester on Monday.  Neil has been teaching here at Northwest College for 20 years.  Bethany is starting her second year in Elementary Education.  I hope they both have a wonderful semester.

Julia and Matthew started Connections Academy on Tuesday.  Julia is a senior (where has the time gone?) and Matthew is a sophomore.   When I asked them they told me no way did they want their picture taken at their computers.  I took their pictures anyway, but it wasn't on the first day.

Wednesday was a big first day of school.  Emma, David, MaryAnne, and Dallin all started school.  Emma is in the 8th grade and was so excited to get back to seeing friends and playing volleyball.  David is in the 6th grade and it is his first year in the Middle school.  He is excited to be in Middle School.  I was running a few minutes later than I wanted to be when I dropped Emma and David off at the Middle School so I didn't get a picture at the school.

MaryAnne is in the 4th grade at Parkside Elementary and Dallin is in 2nd grade.  We decided to let them go to school this year for a change.  They were both very nervous a few days before.  It wasn't easy to leave them at the school, but I know they have great teachers and they will love school.  I dropped all the children off on Wednesday morning.  I shed a few tears on the way home from dropping children off.  I will miss them terribly, but I know this is the right move for them.  On our way home Lydia wanted me to go back because we had left MaryAnne and Dallin behind.  I told her we were supposed to leave them at school, but she didn't like that answer at all.  It seems very quiet at our house during the day now.  I miss the children, but I know this is the right thing for right now.

Joshua wanted to stay at Parkside and go to kindergarten.  I am not quite ready to send him off to school so we are doing kindergarten at home.  He and Lydia will have a great time learning together.  He started his science book in the summer and loves to do school time.  I am going to take him and Lydia to the school district preschool twice a week.  I love that I can stay and spend the time helping them learn.  It will be a good kindergarten year for us.  I love homeschooling kindergarten!

Now to wait for the school bus to bring the children home again.
